We were distributing packages of toiletries in the slum villages and brought one for Donka’s family. The young mother was just sweeping her front doorstep. She tries to keep her home tidy inside and out.
“This is a gift for you as a little token of God’s love and care,” we said.
The mother then began to tell with gratitude how her family had experienced God’s help and protection many times. The survival of six-year-old Maria from life-threatening circumstances was one testimony.
“The child has stopped breathing
and has lain lifeless in my arms six times,
and every time God has brought her back!”
Donka said with tears.
At the age of two Maria acquired severe asthma. Prescriptions for it were expensive and not always effective. When the asthma attacks happened, she stopped breathing, and sometimes the prescribed inhaler didn’t help. Her mother carried her to the church as quickly as she could. There the child was prayed for and her breathing resumed.
Now the family has a new reason for concern. Their four-month-old baby boy Todor, the recipient of this family’s Baby Box, has a heart problem.
Some of the elderly women in the village had come and put a “good eye” charm on the child’s hand to bring health. We told Donka that such charms are superstitious and must not be used by Bible-believing Christians.
She immediately took it off her baby’s hand and said, “I’ll throw it away! We believe and trust only in Jesus! Without God we cannot live. He will hear our prayers and will help with everything!”
