Visiting Grandpa Ivan - Firewood for a Lonely Man

Story written by IGOR SOKIRNY, UKRAINE

Grandpa Ivan lives in the village of Shirokaya Balka in the Odessa region. He has two major problems: visual impairment and loneliness. Life would be easier if he had relatives or friends nearby – but they all live far away, so he must manage each day by himself.

Ivan is completely blind in his right eye and can only see an arm’s length away with his left. His small pension barely pays for food. Needless to say, he was very grateful for the firewood we brought to help him get through the winter.

We encouraged Ivan to trust in God and told him about Jesus, who is the Light of the World. After we prayed together, he gladly received the New Testament we handed him, which he can read at close range. He was happy to have kindness shown to him.

“Can you read this New Testament?” our team member Dima asked Ivan. “Yes, if I hold it very close like this,” he replied.

Help and the Gospel to Ukraine

In this third year of war, our team has helped 1,800 families with approximately 3,000 children in 15 villages and towns in the Odessa region.

The residents have received boxes of food, clothing, blankets, and medical kits. Adults are given a New Testament and children get a kid’s Bible and coloring book. We invite the children to attend our weekly Bible clubs.

In preparation for winter, we also distribute firewood, emergency batteries, battery-powered lamps, and thermoses to help families survive during the constant power outages.
