Spreading Light and Knowledge through the Spirit

Literacy Classes Bring Children to the Church and Help Them Stay in School
Literacy lessons for youth continued through the hot summer in Bulgaria’s poor villages and slum neighborhoods.
In the yard of the Elenovo church, the teaching board and chairs were set up under a big walnut tree. A literacy class for children with learning disabilities and special needs was recently established here. A meal is shared together after each lesson.
“The children have clearly progressed,” says Mila Ivanova. “It is a joy to see how they are already able to read the Bible aloud.”
Mission Possible has trained dozens of volunteers to teach the children in their local church congregations. The teaching materials (primer, boards, and teacher’s guide) have been produced by Mission Possible in cooperation with an organization that specializes in literacy curriculum for all ages.

Throughout the past, Christian churches have encouraged – and made possible – literacy and education.
On mission fields around the world, schools have been founded, the Bible has been translated into local languages, and people have been taught to read it. In this way, the light of both knowledge and Jesus Christ has spread.
Mission Possible shares that vision and operates similarly. We have seen how learning to read and write while getting to know the Bible transforms people’s lives.
In the 1990s we launched literacy classes in the churches of Bulgaria’s slums. From the beginning, children were taught to read the Bible. The literacy education - as well as vocational training - continues through MP today.
In Muslim-majority Albania, our “Center of Hope” maintains a public library which is stocked with Christian literature. Many schoolchildren utilize the study space, which gives us an opportunity to invite them to our other groups and activities. This summer, at the request of a local kindergarten, our team held a Bible-themed day camp. The teachers participated with their students!
Over the next few weeks, in our blogs, we will show how God enables us to help children, teenagers, and families gain knowledge while we point them to the One who saves!
