Little Inna's Smile

Even children understand that there is war in our country. It has affected every family and has robbed children of their joy, spontaneity, and innocent smiles, which are now harder to find on their faces.

That’s why our encounter with little Inna melted my heart. When we handed her a Christmas present she jumped for joy even before she opened it. We snapped a picture as she unwrapped the gift. We watched a sunny smile spread across her face! She picked up the soap and hair clips and exclaimed to her mom, “I’m so happy!”

For many people, these items would not have been a source of great excitement, but for others they can bring so much happiness. Moments like these with Inna are heart-warming and give us renewed resolve to care for these children. How much more God cares for each one of us!

Inna’s mother told us that Inna is an avid reader. How wonderful that we also had a children’s Bible to give! We looked at it together while telling of God, who is always with her and loves her dearly.

The Modest Wishes of Children: Candy, Crayons, a Soft Toy…

In eastern European and Balkan countries that follow the Orthodox calendar, the main Christmas celebration is in January. During the Christmas season, our shelter teams organize events and gift-giving activities for children and parents going through crises or with low incomes.

“We find out in advance what the children’s gift wishes are,” says Oleg Nikiforov, director of the shelter home for mothers and children in Asbest, located in the Ural Mountains. “It’s touching to read what the children want: candy, crayons, a soft toy… The letters also ask for peace in the world and health for family members. Those deeper requests are beyond our ability to fulfill, but the modest desires are easy. Many local individuals, churches, and businesses donate the gifts.”

What joy shines on the children’s faces when they receive their presents! Witnessing that again this year is our Christmas wish!
