A Year in the Rehabilitation Home Changed Maria’s Life

“My life hasn’t been easy,” said Maria. “My family is broken.  Since the age of twelve I had used drugs and went to prison twice for it.”  I remember the happy day when I found out I was pregnant! At the age of 35, I was afraid I would never be a mother.  My boyfriend was a drug addict like me. While we were waiting for our baby’s arrival, he was sentenced to prison. I was shocked, but not for long because I was used to this kind of life.  When little Seraphima was born, I loved her from the first moment. What a wonderful angel! But once we were home, my addictions remained. All my money went toward drugs; there wasn’t enough for diapers and food.

A Change was Needed

When Seraphima was just days old, I met a girl who told me about Jesus and about a rehabilitation center. I didn’t make any promises, but I saved the number.  The next day I ventured out with my baby girl while I was completely intoxicated. Someone called the police. They warned me that if this happened again they would take Seraphima from me.  For several days I stayed home, terrified of that thought. Even there, friends brought me drugs.  But I decided something had to be done. Life couldn’t go on like this. I couldn’t chance losing my beautiful baby.  I called the number I had kept for the rehabilitation center. After an interview, Seraphima and I were admitted to the facility.

A New Beginning

“I lived in the rehabilitation home for exactly one year to the day.  My daughter is now fourteen months old, lively, and growing quickly. My heart rejoices every day! This is where I met Jesus, and He changed my life!”

It was a touching moment when our team member Natalia handed Maria a certificate for completing rehabilitation. Her treatment at our shelter also included training in life skills and one-on-one mentorship with our staff.  Maria and the MP shelter team will stay connected and maintain a close relationship. Mother and daughter are living with one of our counselors until they find their own home.
